Day 1 Recap - Fall Championship Week
Virginia Beach, VA -- The USCAA kicked off its annual Fall Championship Week today in day one of action in both Men's Dvision I Soccer and Women's Volleyball. Below are the highlights.
Women's Volleyball - Division II
#4 Penn State York - 3, #1 UC Clermont - 2
First time participant, Penn State York stunned the defedning National Champions in a five set thriller behind the attack of Jess Dunbar who tallied 20 kills and 3 services aces while Whitney Smyth added 12 kills and 5 aces.
#3 Johnson & Wales Charlotte - 0, #2 Penn State Mont Alto - 3
Mont Alto, looking to make their way back to the title game, made a strong start taking down #3 Johnson & Wales Charlotte in three sets. The offense, led by Kylee Gooding (15 kills, 2 aces) and Gracie Vaughn (11 kills) was no match for the Wildcats who despite playing well defensively, only hit .100 as a team.
#5 Central Maine Community College - 0, #1 UC Clermont - 3
Rebounding in their second match of the day, UC Clermont looked more like the definding title champs hitting over .500 as a team in the match. Led by Kennedy Robinson and Kara Heckmuller who each had 13 kills, the Cougars advanced to 1-1 with the victory over CMCC.
#6 Paul Smith's - 0, #2 Penn State Mont Alto - 3
The Lions of Mont Alto advanced to 2-0 as they defeated Paul Smith's in consecutive sets. Kylie Denlinger did another outstanding job distributing the ball to the offense with 27 assists as Vaughn led the team with 17 kills hitting over .500 in the match.
Women's Volleyball - Division I
#4 Mississippi University for Women - 1, #1 University of Maine Fort Kent - 3
In what looked like could be a back and forth match as UMFK took set one, 25-19 and MUW took set two 25-21, the Bengals took a grueling set three from the Owls 31-29. But despite pushing the game to extra points in the fourth, MUW eventually fell to Maine Fort Kent 27-25. UMFK was led by Jamie Nena (10 kills), Torrie Woods (9 kills) and Mylei Moli (9 kills).
#3 Carlow University - 1, #2 Bluefield State University - 3
In the second game of D1 action, Carlow jumped out to the early 1-0 lead, but the Big Blue found their groove after the first set taking the next three for the 4 set victory. Bluefield rallied behind Allyson Martin with 15 kills, hitting .333 and Kateryna Dashevska with 13 kills (.345) while each added two aces from the service line.
Men's Soccer - Division I
#1 UMFK - 2, #5 Atlantis - 1
Day one of soccer competition kicked off with UMFK vs Atlantis University. UMFK struck first with a late 1st half goal by Michael German assisted by Kevin Maitland in the 38th minute. UMFK went up 2-0 when Ajay Chin netted a second goal for the Bengals assisted by Marcel Holness in the 60th minute. Atlantis University fought hard to climb back into the game scoring late in the second half. Ulises Majluf stole the ball UMFK Keeper and finished the opportunity in the 76th minute. UMFK won 2-1.
#2 Bryant & Stratton Syracuse - 2, #6 Salem - 1 (2OT, PK)
Second game slated for the first day of soccer competition was Bryant & Stratton Syracuse and Salem University. This game went into double over time after the 90 min regulation ended in a 1-1 tie. The loan goals came from Azinho Solomon from Bryant Stratton Syracuse and Mauricio Aguilar Renovales From Salem University. After the two ten minute over time periods a penalty shootout was needed to decide the winner. Bryant Stratton Syracuse came out on top securing the win after 110 minutes of play.
