Men's Soccer
#1 WVU Tech 3 - #5 Lindenwood University-Belleville 2
The top-seeded WVU Tech Golden Bears and second-seeded University of Maine Fort Kent Bengals are set to face off in the finals of the 2013 USCAA Men's Soccer National Championships. The Golden Bears upended the fifth-seeded Lindenwood Belleville Lynx after a thrilling overtime golden goal penalty kick by Forward Dennis Fuerst in the 93rd minute.
The game's first goal came on an unassisted strike by Lindenwood defender Patrick Reilly in the 19th minute. The home town team answered soon after off a free kick by midfielder Dominik Idel that landed in the upper left hand corner of the Lynx's goal. Lindenwood took the lead once again on an unassisted goal by midfielder Juan Pablo Santamaria until the Golden Bears struck back late in the game (82:41) to even the score at 2-2. WVU Tech was aggressive late in the match tallying 9 shots in the second half and overtime to Lindenwood's 3 attempts.
The highly anticipated Championship matchup between WVU Tech and the Univeristy of Maine Fort Kent will take place Saturday, at 3:00pm (est.) at Trace Fork field. These two finalists faced off during the regular season where the Golden Bears edged out the Bengals 4-3.
#2 University of Maine-Fort Kent 5 - #6 Berkeley College NY 1
The perennial powerhouse and second-seeded University of Maine Fort Kent Bengals defeated Berkeley College NY 5-1 to advance to the finals of the 2013 USCAA Men's Soccer National Championships. The Bengals scored early and often, tallying two goals 22 seconds apart from each other in the first half. Kennard Brown paced Fort Kent with two goals and an assist in the winning effort.
The top seeded WVU Tech Golden Bears will take on the second-seeded University of Maine-Fort Kent Bengals on Saturday at 3:30pm at Trace Fork Field. These two finalists faced off during the regular season where the Golden Bears edged out the Bengals 4-3.
#3 Briarcliffe College 2 - #7 Washington Adventist University 0
The third-seeded Briarcliffe College Bulldogs defeated the Shock of Washington Adventist University 2-0 in the first quarterfinal consolation game. Juan Murillo scored first for the defending USCAA Men's Soccer National Champions in the 43rd minute. Defender Andres Zuluaga tallied Briarcliffe's second goal in the 71st minute of action.
Both teams were very aggressive offensively. The Shock recorded 19 total shots to the Bulldogs' 12 attempts. Additionally, Washington Adventist University was charged with 20 total fouls to Briarcliffe's 13 in this heated matchup.
#4 Rochester College 4 - #8 University of Maine-Machias 3
The fourth-seeded Rochester College Warriors defeated the Clippers of University of Maine- Machias 4-3 in the second quarterfinal consolation game. Forward Justin Kane led the way for the (12-3-1) team from Rochester Hills, Michigan with a hat trick. Alfredo Palacios paced the Clippers with two goals on two shots in the losing effort.
Both teams were very aggressive offensively and toward each other. The Warriors recorded 22 total shots to the Clippers 19 attempts. Additionally, Rochester was charged with 10 total fouls to Maine Machias's 14 in this heated matchup.
Women's Soccer
#1 University of Maine-Fort Kent 2 - #5 Alfred State College 1
In the first semifinal game of the 2013 USCAA Women's National Championship, #1 University of Maine-Fort Kent (UMFK) defeated #5 Alfred State College, 2-1. The Bengals gained the advantage quickly after the start of the match with a goal by Marie-Laurence Monta in the first minute of play. Alfred State was able to settle down from there in what ended up as a back and forth game.
UMFK would keep pressure on Alfred State throughout, having several shots bounce off the crossbar, until they were finally able to put in an insurance goal by USCAA First Team All-American, Katherine Ferland, in the 84th minute of play. The Alfred State Pioneers answered back quickly with a goal scored by Hannah Holmok off a penalty kick in the 88th minute. However, the Pioneers comeback attempt stalled afterward and the Lady Bengals edged out the victory.
With the win, UMFK moves onto the 2013 USCAA Women's National Championship game on Saturday, November 2nd at Trace Fork Field at 1:00pm. University of Maine-Fort Kent will face Daemen College in the National Championship game, a rematch of last year's finals which were won by Daemen College.
#2 Daemen College 4 - #6 Albany College of Pharmacy
In the second semifinal game of the 2013 USCAA Women's National Soccer Championship, #2 Daemen College defeated #6 Albany College of Pharmacy (ACPS) by a score of 4-1. Leading Daemen College to victory was USCAA First Team All-American, Samantha Engel, who ended the night with a hat trick and one assist.
Engel would get Daemen on the board first with a penalty kick in the 36th minute. However, ACPS forward Jen Bechard, would tie the score at one with a shot to the top right corner of the net to go into halftime tied at one. Engel would go on to add two more goals and one assist in the second half to help lead Daemen College to a 4-1 win.
Daemen College will face #1 University of Maine at Fort Kent in the USCAA Women's National Championship Final on Saturday, November 2 at Trace Fork Field at 1:00pm. This will be a rematch of the 2012 USCAA Women's National Soccer Championship Final as Daemen College defeated UMFK by a score of 1-0 in overtime.
#3 Florida College 2 - #10 WVU Tech 0
In the second women's soccer consolation game of the day, #3 Florida College defeated #10 WVU Tech by a score of 2-0. Florida College was able to keep WVU Tech scoreless for the game while scoring a goal in each half of action. Scoring for Florida College were Jessica Webb in the 24thminute, and Chloe Allen, in the 54th minute. Being the aggressor for the majority of the game, Florida College outshot the host team, WVU Tech, 23-8.
Keeping WVU Tech in the game was goalkeeper, Morgan Manning, who was able to save 15 of the 17 shots that she faced.
#4 SUNY-ESF 1 - #8 Penn College 2
In the first game of the day at Trace Fork Field, #8 Penn College defeated #4 SUNY ESF, 2-1, in a game that went into overtime. After a scoreless first half, each team was able to put the ball in the back of the net in the later part of the second half. In the 97th minute of play, Robyn Beddow was able to get a shot behind goalkeeper, Olivia Gagliardi to win the match.
SUNY ESF outshot Penn College, 16-7 and also had a 7-3 corner kick advantage. Scoring for SUNY ESF was, Megan Beckwith, in the 67th minute to force overtime. Penn College ends their tournament run with a record of 2-1 while SUNY ESF returns home with a 0-2 record.
