Berkeley College New York Wins First Men's Soccer National Championship in Program History

Virginia Beach, VA – The Knights of Berkeley NY made history tonight as they captured the 2019 USCAA Division 2 Men’s Soccer National Championship.  The Knights defeated the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales in a tough battle that ended in a score of 3-0.

 

Berkeley NY was seeded the number one overall seed heading into the National Championship.  They battled their way in pool play to secure their ticket to the Championship game.  They a had a tough battle against Southern Maine Community College but ended up securing the win in double overtime.  The Knights then recorded a 2-0 win over Penn State Brandywine.  Johnson & Wales NC was seeded number 2 overall heading into the tournament. 

 

In the championship game, the Knights and Wildcats fought back and forth in a physical and upbeat tempo.  It wasn’t until the 27th minute when Amadou Sy found the back of the net off of an assist from Ryuji Sugiyama. The Wildcats fought back by earning many different attempts but could not get the ball passed Dario Cruz-Sepulveda.  The Knights went into half time with a 1-0 lead. Berkeley NY would not settle for the one goal led; the Knights came out of halftime scoring a goal just one-minute in.  Sy found the back of the net for his second goal of the game.  The Tournament Most Valuable Player would not settle for just two goals, Sy netted his third goal of the game in the 66th minute.  Marcos Leon recorded the assist for the last goal of the game.  The Wildcats of Johnson & Wales NC would look to score quick and fast, but Cruz-Sepulveda dominated in goal. The Knights from Berkeley NY would receive the title of the 2019 USCAA Division II National Champions.
