SUNY Delhi and Cleary University Repeat as Cross Country National Champions
November 11, 2017 -- Virginia Beach, VA
The SUNY Delhi men and Cleary University women returned to Virginia Beach and claimed the 2017 USCAA Cross Country National Championships for the second straight year in a row. Amid unfavorable weather conditions, in which runner’s dealt with strong winds, chilly temperatures, and a soggy course, both teams won first place in the men’s and women’s individual and team contests.
Led by Women’s Coach of the Year Sarah Boyle, Cleary was led by junior Madison Paquette, who won the individual National Championship with a time of 23:21 and a 6:17 pace. She was followed behind fellow teammate Natasha Stevenson, who finished the 6K in 23:37. Stevenson edged out Rebecca Broadbent of Vermont Tech by less than a second, who took home third place honors.
The Cleary Cougars used strong performances to Aleighsha Engisch and Breunisje Kass-McGrady, who also finished in the top ten of the field. Cleary won the day with a team of score of 38. SUNY – ESF earned runner- up honor’s in the women’s team field with a score of 58. Junior All-America Marissa Latrop anchored the Mighty Oaks, finishing fifth overall out of the 125 runner’s in the field. St Mary of the Woods College finished in third place.
On the men’s side, the SUNY Delhi Broncos ran away with the men’s team National Championship, having the top four finishers cross the finish line in green and gold. The Broncos’ had an overall score of 23 – twice as good their finish last year -- and Kobie Lane claimed the individual National Championship with a time of 25:58. Delhi’s Nick Arnecke and Jon Messler both finished the race at second and third place, but with a time of 26:06. They both crossed the line at the same, but with Arnecke finishing just a hair sooner. The SUNY ESF men also finished this year’s national championships in second place. Mark McClenahan and Tom Keenan both had a time of 27:45 and led the Mighty Oaks, finishing 11th and 12th, respectively. The Cleary University men’s team finished third overall and were led by All-American Joseph Ufolla, who was 5 out of 166 runner’s in this year’s National Championships. His time was 27:01.
